Geraldo Rivera's 1972 expose of Willowbrook State School

Pennhurst was not unique. The conditions in which institutionalized people were forced to live were the same state to state, and institution to institution. In 1972 a young Geraldo Rivera exposed conditions at Staten Island's Willowbrook Hospital to a shocked American public.

I was at Middletown and mid hudson state hospitols from 9/68 to 6/71 at age 17 exsample locked in room,no clothes,bed,water,or toilet ! we were beaten, kicked, if you said anything it got worse!

For those of you in the comments asking what happened to the people after Im here to tell you. I work as a DSP in a group home taking care of people with disabilities. We have 3 people in our facility that were saved from Willowbrook. All the people are safe and were relocated to group homes .
